How to Produce Cosmetic Creams and lotions by Using a KOS High Shear Homogenizer

High shear homogenizer disperses one phase or ingredient (liquid, solid, gas) into a main continuous phase (liquid), with which it would normally be. A rotor together with a stator is used either in a tank containing the solution to be mixed, or in pipe through which the solution passes, to create shear. Usually, a high speed mixer can be suited four types of working heads including the claw type, the mesh type, the long hole type and the round type for different working conditions. The high shear homogenizer can be widely used in cosmetics, food, beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, paint& ink industry etc.

Most cosmetic cream formulations are emulsions which are defined as a heterogeneous system composed of an immiscible liquid dispersed as droplets in another liquid. Moreover, most of cosmetic creams are of the oil-in- water type with an oil phase or water-in-oil emulsion. Therefore, the manufacturing process is centered on two of the most difficult mixing tasks: hydration of thickening and suspending agents and preparation of a stable emulsion. Many problems can be encountered during the manufacturing process when using conventional agitators:

1.Hydration of thickening and suspending agents is one of the most difficult of all mixing operations. Agglomerates can easily form and some ingredients require shear in order to develop their desired properties;
2.When adding powdered ingredients to the vessel, partially hydrated materials can build up on the vessel wall and parts of the agitator;
3.Agitators cannot easily form stable emulsions even when the oil and water phases have been heated;
4.Long process times and additional equipment are often required to achieve a homogeneous product;

Solutions to solve above though a KOS high speed emulsifying machine:

 high shear mixer The vessel is charged with the “continuous” phase. The KOS mixer is started, and the solid/powdered ingredients are then added. The powerful suction created by the high speed rotation of the rotor blades draws both liquid and solid ingredients into the work head where they are rapidly mixed.
 high shear mixer Once the powdered ingredients have been fully dispersed in the “continuous” liquid phase, the “dispersed” phase can be added to form the emulsion. The high shear emulsifying action of the rotor/stator work head ensures that the emulsion is uniform and stable
 high shear mixer The solids are broken down in the precision machined rotor/stator work head. The micronized powders and other ingredients are fully dispersed into the liquid before being forced out through the stator and circulated into the body of the mix. At the same time fresh material is drawn into the work head.

1.Consistent product quality and repeatability; Advantages of KOS high speed disperser;
2.Agglomerate-free mix;
3.Stable emulsion;
4.Rapidly reducing mixing time;
5.Maximized yields of raw materials as thickening agents are fully hydrated and other ingredients fully dispersed.
