Is That The Higher The Rational Speed Is, the better the emulsification is?

 

Nowadays, the high shear mixers machine plays an important role in the production of daily chemical. It is designed to distribute two or more immiscible phases to another continuous phase quickly, effectively and evenly. The phase will be put to a serious of operation including intensively shearing, centrifugally extruding, impacting and breaking, through which the texture of phases will have a delightful and flattering texture. Then some people cannot be help thinking the full emulsification effectiveness. They believe that the higher the rational speed is, the better the emulsification is. That’s right but not the truth. Today, we would like to figure out what really makes the emulsification better?

Typically, there are 4 key factors closely connected with the high shear homogenizer mixer. The sharpness and hardness of knife, the space between rotor and stator and the particle size have great impacts on the shearing and emulsifying effectiveness. Generally, the sharpness and hardness of knife, the space between rotor and stator and the particle size is stereotype or cannot be changed easily. What we need to do is to have a better control of knife relative motion. Typically, the knife relative motion is shown with the peripheral velocity since the stator is stationary. The higher the peripheral velocity is, the stronger the crushing and shearing forces are. Thus, the emulsification is high performance. However, not until the peripheral velocity reaches its maximum, did we find that the maximum peripheral velocity weaken emulsification. When the peripheral velocity reaches higher and higher peripheral velocity (far beyond the standard), the phases in the mixer may become encumbrance in the emulsification. They will impede the forward pace of other phases. Thus, the flow rate of phases is reduced. Meanwhile, the temperature in the mixer gets higher and higher. The temperature is so high that it enables the phase to get together again, decreasing the emulsifying effectiveness.

The Too high peripheral velocity may also lead to demulsification. It is explained as the breaking crude oil emulsion into oil and water phases in the dictionary. The demulsification will not make your phase full emulsified. Instead, the demulsification will separate the oil and water. Thus, your emulsification of phase becomes effortless. In a word, under a certain numerical value, the higher the rational speed is, the better the emulsification is. Otherwise, it may destroy the emulsification effectiveness. Just make the best use of emulsifying mixer and shear the phase perfectly.
