Q1 How to adjust tablet press to ensure consistent tablet quality?

Tablet press and tablet tooling cleanliness is crucial for sanitary tablet production. The tablet quality, including consistent weight, thickness, dosage, and hardness, depends on various factors, and tablet press machine and tablet tooling is definitely one of the decisive parts.

Improperly amounted or maintained lower punch retainers is a common cause of weight variation, whereas inconsistent tool working length would be responsible for any deviation in tablet hardness and thickness. Filling cams is closely related to the tablet quality consistence in tablet process. If the filling cams are too deep, excessive granulation falls into the die, then discharged at the weight cam and recirculated. However, if the feeder cannot reclaim this granulation, it will bypass the feeder and accumulate at the neck of the turret. Consequently, the centrifugal force of the spinning turret will propel the granulation outward and refill the dies after passing over the weight cam, leading to weight variation.

Q2 How to increase tabletting speed so as to boost output

On handheld pill press, tabletting speed totally relies on the hand operation speed, but on rotary tablet press, we have three ways to help boost output.

First, the most directly and feasible way, is to adjust the tabletting speed by spinning the knob on the control panel. The bigger the number, the faster the speed, then tablet output would be increased.

Second is to upgrade your tablet press machine. A low speed rotary tablet press like ZP-5, ZP-7, ZP-9, its production capacity is limited with 6,000 to 15,000 pieces per hour, but a medium-high speed tablet press like ZP-35 can produce 150,000pcs per hour, 10 times more than that of ZP-9. But the cost for upgrading machine is rather high. The necessity of upgrading should be carefully considered and be responsible for the actual applications.

Third one is to use multi-tip tooling rather than single tip tooling. There are several or more tips on one multi-tip tooling. Every one compression of the tooling will get quite a few tablets, which is several times production more than the ordinary single tip tablet tooling.

Q3 Tablet press tooling comes in a variety of sizes and materials. How does this affect the finished tablet?

In general, every tablet press company has its own special configurations of the tablet tooling, and not common for other companies’. But B tooling and D tooling, conforming to the EU and TSM standard, are the most common tooling and universally accepted. The difference of configurations are determined by the maximum available tonnage, and the output or speed of a tablet press due to fewer tooling stations in a given turret diameter.

Tablet compression tooling is available in a variety of materials. High chromium steels tend to be preferred over standard steel for better product release, but it does have a tendency to be more brittle, so it is not best suited for some tablet shapes or granulation requiring excessively high compression tonnage.

 

Q4 What types of tablets are suitable for multi-tip tooling?

To decide what kind of tablets are suitable for multi-tip tooling, the tablet size, shape, compression force, ejection force, product sticking, and overall condition of the tablet press should be taken into consideration. Punches will suffer great pressure as several tips are equipped on one punch cup. To protect the tooling from damage, the designer will design and control the quantity and the diameter of the tips. Small tablets with diameter from 1mm to 6mm are pretty suitable for multi-tip tooling production. Hence, the pills like M/30, A/215, K/9 could be produced by multi-tip tooling in bulk production.
